The Age of Walnut 1660-1740
Walnut was much favoured by the Elizabethans and became extensively used for fashionable furniture well into the 18th century. Its use coincided with advances in furniture design and construction –largely thanks to the continued influx of continental craftsmen, styles and improved construction techniques- resulting in some of the most pleasing furniture ever produced, as the lecture will show. Expensive veneering and lavish marquetry characterised the magnificent pieces of this age and the lecture will illustrate the techniques involved.
